The Coppell Softball team started district play on Friday night at home against pre-season favorite JJ Pearce. The Cowgirls have hopes for their first District Championship in many years and that journey started successfully on Friday night at Cowgirl Field with an 8-5 victory.
The game opened with JJ Pearce getting off to a quick start with 2 runs in the first inning. Pitcher Nora Rodriguez was able to get out of the jam with 2 of her 8 strikeouts to limit the damage.
Coppell got those runs back in the bottom of the first with RBI singles from Logan Kegley and Madi Traver.
In the top of the 3rd, the top of Pearce line up again made noise and they took another lead, 5-2. With their backs to the wall and looking at the possibility of dropping to 0-1 in district, the Coppell bats woke up and got to work.
The bottom of the third got started with back to back triples by Madi Traver and Sami Thomas. Katelyn O’Quinn’s double and a couple of steals, including O’Quinn’s steal of home on a dropped third strike brought Coppell back to a tie, 5-5 after 3 innings.
Pitcher Rodriguez found her stride beginning the 4th inning. She gave up only one more hit, a 7th inning single, and closed the door on the Mustangs. She brought her season record to 6-2. Nora was helped by some stellar defense from Sami Thomas in CF with two great catches and Alex Denton with two great plays on hard hit balls.
Offensively, the Cowgirls got production from several hitters. Madi Traver led the way going 4-4 with 2 triples, double, single, 3 RBI and 3 Runs scored. Also having a big night were Sami Thomas, 2-4, triple, double, RBI; Mia Hermans 2-4 with 2 runs scored, and Logan Kegley, 1-3 with 2 RBI.
The Cowgirls continue district play next Tuesday at Lake Highlands. The next home game is next Friday, March 10th, against WT White. That night is also Elementary/Middle School night with all students in grades K-8 getting in free. Remember, all CGSA players get in free every game and the Cowgirls would love to have another big crowd in attendance for that game!
